The Conservation Department inspires
public awareness of Ascension's environment using a variety
of outreach and communication methods. The Conservation
Department maintains a visitor and outreach Centre in Georgetown.
The Centre hosts a variety of interpretive displays and
has several field guide and resource materials for sale.
There are also interpretive displays present in Green Mountain
National Park.
During the school holidays, the Conservation Department
develops a tailored educational programme for students from
Two Boats School. This programme involves field visits to
areas of natural and cultural interest, complete with group
activities.
Our office also offers a variety of regular tours for visitors
to Ascension, including Island Tours, Green Mountain Tours
and Seabird Tours. Throughout the year, the Conservation
Department works with cruise ships and tour providers to
offer specialised programmes for tour groups. We can develop
individual programmes for private tour groups and focus
on particular areas or species of interest.
Another method of dissemination involves weekly articles
in the local Islander
(in text link: http://www.the-islander.org.ac/ ) newspaper.
The 'Conservation Weekly' feature focuses on recent projects
or areas of concern for the Conservation Department. In
addition to our weekly article, the Department publishes
a quarterly newsletter. Although the newsletter is published
electronically to conserve paper and other resources, you
can ask for a hard copy to be mailed to you or explore the
electronic version under the Quarterly
link (in text link: quarterly.htm ) on this site.
