In 2003 the National
Protected Areas (Ascension) Ordinance was passed which
allows for the designation of Protected Areas on Ascension.
Areas can be designated Sanctuaries, Nature Reserves or
National Parks under this Ordinance. In 2005, the Green
Mountain National Park Order was signed by His Excellency
the Governor, designating Green Mountain as a National
Park, the first protected area on Ascension under this
new law.

Proposed Protected Areas
Fourteen areas have been proposed as possible areas for
designation under the National Protected Areas Ordinance.
These areas were proposed to the island Council (when it
was in place) who requested an island wide consultation.
This consultation took place, with over 50% approval for
all areas. Three pilot protected areas were subsequently
presented to the island Council, but only Green Mountain,
the pilot National Park has been designated.
